Hard Enamel vs. Soft Enamel Pins: What Your Money Actually Gets You
Run your thumb over a custom lapel pin. Is it glass-smooth, or can you feel raised metal lines between colors? That simple touch test often tells you whether you’re holding hard enamel or soft enamel. They may look similar in photos, but the differences in durability, feel, cost, and longevity are significant.
Hard enamel (cloisonné-style) uses powdered glass fired at 800–850°C, then polished flat. You get a glass-smooth, scratch-resistant surface with no raised metal, excellent UV resistance, and a lifespan measured in decades. Trade-offs: it’s brittle (can chip or crack if dropped), costs 2–5× more than soft enamel, and high-temperature firing makes exact color matching harder. Best for premium collectibles, military coins, and items handled often but not dropped repeatedly.
Soft enamel uses liquid epoxy resin cured at room temperature. You get a textured surface (metal dividers sit higher than the color fill), faster production (days, not weeks), lower cost, and good impact resistance because epoxy flexes instead of cracking. Trade-offs: scratches more easily, prolonged sunlight causes yellowing, and it’s not ideal for outdoor or high-wear use. (Note: a clear epoxy dome can make soft enamel perfectly smooth—so the finger test isn’t foolproof.) Best for budget-friendly giveaways, event badges, and indoor promo items.
Here’s how they compare on cost and MOQ: a typical 1" hard enamel pin runs 2–2–5+ with MOQs often 500+ pieces and 2–4 week lead time. Soft enamel runs 0.80–0.80–1.50 with MOQs as low as 100–300 pieces and 1–2 week production. Hard enamel wins on scratch and UV resistance; soft enamel survives drops better.
One smart question to ask your supplier: “Do you use high-temperature firing or room-temperature curing? And what’s your polishing process?” A trustworthy supplier will explain the trade-offs honestly. One who dodges the question or calls everything “premium” is best avoided.
